The village of Kournas is situated 45 km from Chania, 20 km from Rethymnon and only 7 km from the seaside resort of Georgioupolis, known for its long sandy beach, well organised for swimming, water sports, dining, shopping and vibrant seaside cafés.
The Only Natural Freshwater Lake in Crete
A highlight of the area is Lake Kournas, the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. The lake measures approximately 1,080 m in length and 880 m in width, with a maximum depth of 22.5 metres. Its picturesque setting is surrounded by dense vegetation of osier and myrtle trees, while olive groves cover the southeastern hillsides. The white sandy shore around the lake makes it an ideal place for swimming, relaxing walks and enjoying the peaceful landscape.
